RFI: gift for an Eagle scout?

Eagle in question is the son of a good friend. I'm not sure he could pick me out of a lineup. He's 18, about to graduate high school. I don't know very much about his interests, etc.

I'm a former scout, former scouter, but I haven't been to an eagle ceremony in at least 10 years ( and that one specifically said no gifts on the invite).

Of course, being me, it's this Sunday. I'll probably end up driving it over to the house, don't trust the postal service.

Best I've come up with is an Amazon gift card and a nice, heartfelt letter. In spite of the (B)SA going off the rails I still think it's a major accomplishment.

You idea is spot on. If the kid is still going to be active in Scouts and camping - a gift card to REI/Moosejaw/Back Country/ etc. is also in play.

An alternative inspired by your desire to give the kid flexibility is set forth below.

A card and cash (2 20s and a 10)/ 5 20s if you want him to spend the money

a crisp (50)/100 if you want him to hang on to it

AND this DIY planner which seems very user friendly

Maybe a jackknife, fillet knife, leatherman or swiss army knife?

And eagle scout is still a major accomplishment for sure. Joe Kent is a former scout

Not to be a Jocko shill but maybe Jockos books Discipline equals freedom or Extreme Ownership?

Regardless wish that young man the best

My go to was always a folding knife. Both my boys are Eagles and a lot of their friends were, too.

Find out from Dad what he's got in terms of blades. He might be able to use an upgrade in EDC folder, small fixed blade or hatchet/folding saw/multi tool.

If in doubt, some nice wool socks are always useful, don't require a ton of knowledge about him.

I got my neighbor's son a BSA Buck 110 knife engraved with his name, date and troop number. Unfortunately, the BSA models are sold out at the moment.

You could still get an engraved Buck, but it wouldn't have the BSA logo.

Our son is an Eagle Scout. It's been a few years, and he and his dear wife have four kids (the two oldest are in the early years of Girl Scouts, and his son will be starting Cub Scouts in the fall).

Had to ask my wife, and she reminded me that we gave him a nice fob watch and a table top box with the Eagle Scout logo on top to put small stuff in.

I like the knife idea too; have a bunch myself, including a Victorinox Tinker that I have carried daily for over 50 years. If the new Eagle is so disposed, he might like a pocket knife with the Eagle logo on it.

Go on Amazon and search for "Eagle Scout gifts"; there's a bunch of them.

And my wife just said the obvious: "Go to the local Scout store"

Case has a couple of nice Eagle Scout edition knives.

A nice compass (like the heirloom-ish one from County Comm).

    REI or Moosejaw gift card.

There are several nice ideas presented above.
